[www.keralites.net] Intiative for conserving, sustaining and promoting one million trees of medical and spiritual values

Thapovanam Grow Green Intiative (TGGI)

On this Gandhi jayanthi (Oct 2), Thapovanam Sidhashramam and its followers will mark the day as a seva day, by cleaning the surroundings andpublic roads. During this day, a new mission called Thapovanam Grow Green Intiative (TGGI) shall be launched by His Holiness Madhavacharyan Bodhisattvan Sri Sri ShivadattaSahasran by lauching the intiative of planting a billion trees which carries special medical and spiritual benefits. His Holiness has always awakened us with the words " One tree is equivalent to a thousand children".

The banyan tree is a symbol of Indian cultural heritage and also our national tree. Closely related to banyan tree is the Peepal tree or the Bodhi tree under which His Holiness Gautama Buddha attained nirvana and became the first Bodhisattva. Since ancient India, especially in the villages of kerala there existed innumerable sacred grove or kavu with enriched flaura and fauna and a beautiful banyan tree with all its branches and outgrowths. A major share of ecological balance of these villages happenend through these sacred grove (kavu). And for the same reason these sacred grove (kavu) was rightly called the soul of the village. But, today the villages are not only loosing these sacred grove (kavu) but also the trees, flaura and fauna that were associated with these.

An extensive full blown banyan tree is equivalent to five large trees. It can act as a storehouse of water through its root, equivalent to that amount of water required for a mans eight year survival. It can store 250 kilos of glucose in its roots made though photosynthesis and can convert one tonne of carbon dioxide to oxygen. The process of atmospheric oxygenation, sound pollution, protection from UV radiations, water storing capabilities are done through its extensive branches and leaves. It plays an important role in directing the water through its body to the water table. For the same reason, the need for conservation of forests and trees especially preserving banyan tree plays an inevitable role and carries an undoubted responsibility.Banyan tree has a definitive medicinal use. Its finds its use in curing diabetes mellitus, joint related diseases, accentuate wound healing, manufacturing of tooth paste etc. The western countries continue to explore the research capabilities and advantages of banyan trees. A tree of such medical and natural value are to be preserved and promoted by every means. Any intention to destroy it is like banishing ones own existence!

Sandal tree is yet another important tree which carries similar importance as that of banyan tree. Sandal wood is primarily a heat stabilizer. The medical value of sandal wood is priceless. It is still used for treating hyperthermia and sweat related complaints. The mere presence of sandal tree increases the presence of positive energy (pure life-force-energy) thus reducing atmospheric temperature. Thus, to combat global warming conserving, sustaining and promoting sandal wood carries immense importance.

The ignorance on the need of forest conservation when time is slowly running out due to global warming and pollution is a curse on humanity. Due to this reason India is slowly loosing its pace of natural immunity to fight of infection. The once boasted natural beauty of India is slowly loosing its grip and it should be preserved before it leaves an irrepairable damage.

The international law for nature conservation directs every city to have a minimum of one hectare forest. Only then will a city be able to contain pollution effectively. The national agenda of converting the total national area into 33% forest by the year 2012 is to be promoted through planting roadside trees and taking adequates care to those trees which has a history that may date as far as a decade or a century. If these trees had a tongue, it would have said Hey humans, donot destroy me....I live just for you!.

The Thapovanam seva sangham with all its sevaks have shown themselves as a role model to the world by planting such trees of medical and spiritual importance like banyan tree, sandal tree, neem tree etc in their own home and taking necessary care to sustain them. We have long been promoting the verse

A banyan tree for a village and a sandal tree for each home . Let us awaken to to the WWF and its promotion India dont buy trouble. Let us open our eyes and awaken ourselves to stand together for a world of perfect ecological balance and happiness.
