8 men rob passengers in moving Blueline bus

NEW DELHI: Eight criminals allegedly robbed passengers of a Blueline bus of cash and valuables on Wednesday morning.

The robbers boarded the bus plying on route number 724 between Uttam Nagar and Nehru Place at C1, Janak Puri bus stop at 11 am. The bus had started from Uttam Nagar depot around 10.35 am. They made away with cash and valuables, including a gold chain, belonging to nearly a dozen passengers. A lot of time was wasted by Delhi police, which was bickering over jurisdiction. Finally, a case was registered at Mayapuri police station. But by that time the robbers had gone into hiding.

Initial investigations suggest that bus conductor Sanjay and driver Sher Singh were involved."We suspect that the conductor and the driver are involved and are questioning them," said a senior police officer. The bus was packed with more than 55 pasenegers and though they raised an alarm, the driver and conductor did not stop.

The robbers got off at Lajwanti Chowk. A passenger, Aline Harrison, who works at a private company in Nehru Place, was robbed of her gold chain and cash worth Rs 1,500, while another person, Ranjit Kumar, claimed that the robbers took away Rs 5,000 and his mobile phone. Other passengers said they were threatened with knives by the robbers. "One of the robbers stood guard at the exit and entry, while the others snatched money and valuables from hapless passengers," said a passenger, Abhishek Kumar.

The police said passengers told them that the robbers had taken a man, who was apparently known to the conductor, hostage. But when the conductor gestured towards the assailants that the man was known to him, they let him go and caught hold of another passenger. "Hence, we suspect that the conductor and driver are involved," said a police officer. Investigating officers said the passengers had told them that the bus driver, did not stop the bus before Dhaula Kuan where the assailants got off and escaped. DCP (west) Sharad Agarwal said: "We have registered a case. It was only a pickpocketing incident and no one was injured."
