Recalls Dull Maruti's Image?
It can take decades to build a reputation and just months to watch it collapse, they say. Things don't appear to be going too well for Maruti lately. Hot on the heels on registering an eroding market share and less than a year after recalling one lakh A-Star variants for defective fuel pumps, the company has now recalled 6,000 Altos to fix an oil leakage in engines.
According to automobile experts the leakage erupted after the company tweaked the F-series engine in order to meet Bharat Stage IV emission standards. The company has asked its more than 800 sales network centres and nearly 2,740 service workshops to check and repair the affected Altos. However the issue can be easily repaired at the workshop, said the spokesman.
Alto being the largest selling car in India (more than 20000 units sold per month), Maruti is in fact uncertain on the number of cars affected by oil leakage. The company sold 2.35 lakh Altos for the year to end March.
Even though a company spokesman played down the episode, saying this oil leakage cannot be termed as a recall, the issue is likely to cause a dent on Maruti's repute, especially given the fact that the carmaker is all set to launch the 1000cc Alto.
Remember the recall scandal linked to faulty pedals that blemished Japanese carmaker Toyota's reputation for quality? Do you think this recall, although minor, will dent India's largest carmaker's image?
