Ministers push their men for Padma awards

KOCHI: Keep the merit apart. The names of the favourites of ministers and their wards, too, have found a place in the list of people recommended by the state government for Padma awards to the Centre.

The state has submitted a list of 40 persons recommended by the state Cabinet for Padma awards 2011 to the Centre.

The list carries the names of some people who have been recommended based on the interest of some ministers. Though initially a list of 31 people was prepared, nine more names were included later.

The nine names later included in the list for Padmasree Award are Dr Mohammed Illias Sahadulla (CMD, KIMS), Sundar Menon (Sun Group International), K Madhavan (freedom fighter), Udayathara Nair (senior journalist), Dr Thomas Mathew (Kozhikode), Dr Shaji Prabhakaran (Thiruvananthapuram), Fr Joseph Valiyaveettil, Shahan Hassan Musaliar (Chairman, TKM College Trust) and Dr Jose Chacko Periapuram.

Of this, the first three names were suggested by Food and Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran at a later stage. Sources said the name of Udayathara Nair was suggested by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan's son Arun Kumar.

Though the name of Dr K S David was submitted by CPM Ernakulam district secretary Gopi Kottamurickal to the Chief Minister, mentioning him as a long-term follower of the party, the name did not appear in the final list.

Though the names of Sathyan Anthikad (film director), C L Jose (playwright) and Prof P C Thomas (educationist) suggested by both Revenue Minister K P Rajendran and Food and Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran were in the initial discussions, they were not included in the final list.

Others recommended for the awards are M S Swaminathan (Bharat Ratna), K J Yesudas (Padma Vibhushan), Vellayani Arjunan, Infosys CEO S Gopalakrishnan, CIAL MD C G Krishnadas Nair, E Sreedharan (Padma Bhushan), P Govinda Pillai, Cheriyanad grama panchayat president V K Vasudevan, film director Shaji N Karun, actors Madhu, KPAC Lalitha and Aranmula Ponnamma, singer P Jayachandran, music director M K Arjunan, writer George Onakkur, Soorya Krishnamoorthy, I M Vijayan, M C Jacob, of Anna Aluminium Company, Dr Marthandan Pillai, Dr J Hareendran Nair, Dr N P A Namboothiri, Dr Azad Mooppan, Dr V V Bashi, of Chennai, oncologist Dr Gangadharan, Shankar (Habitat), Kerala Tulu Academy chairman Pundoor Venkataraja, K Raveendranathan Nair, Dr P K Ramachandran Nair (University of Florida), Karshakashree award winner Vasu, Peruvanam Kuttan Marar and Mavelikkara S R Raju
