Re: [www.keralites.net] VERY USEFUL INFORMATION TO SHARE - Fuel.

See below info/comment which i had received from my cos who worked in an oil & gas company as a construction / Training Manager

The information about temperature is theoritically correct but not practical and the monetary gain is ignorable compared to the worry about it in mind. The reason the tank is kept under ground is to minimise temperature changes to the liquid with climate. The earth does not change temperature as fast as the weather conditions except on the surface.

The concern about vapour space vs. level in the tank at filling time is not correct at all. Petrol has a certain vapour pressure at a given temperature and as the level goes down in the tank, the liquid will vapourise to maintain this vapour pressure. When the level goes up the vapour will condense again to maintain the pressure. But you lose petrol if you keep the tank lid open longer than necessary.

Diesel is not normally volatile at room temperature, therefore no need to worry at all.

What is more important is the safety aspects at petrol pumps which many people ignore, like switching off the engine and mobile phone use.

Very useful information to share

Tips for filling petrol and diesel:-

Only buy or fill up your car or bike during early morning, when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks underground.. The colder the ground, the more dense the fuel. When it gets warmer, petrol expands. So, buying in the afternoon or in the evening, your litre is not exactly a litre . In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature play an important role. 1 degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps
.

Another most important tip is to fill up when your tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank the less is the air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine.

Another reminder, if there is a fuel truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy, DO NOT fill up--most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS - IT IS IMPORTANT FOR AS MANY PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THIS, ESPECIALLY IN THE WAKE OF RISING PETROL PRICES.
