Is Islam against women? Time Magazine tries to find out!
The cover of the 9 August 2010 issue of Time magazine is controversial. A picture of a pretty Afghan woman whose nose was cut off by Taliban as retribution for violating Taliban-ish tenets of Islam which have nothing to do with the Holy Koran. For a change, all four editions—US, Europe, Asia and South Pacific—have the same cover story for the first time in a long time.
Time's choice is doubtless provocative, one reason journalism exists. However, controversial questions on Islam are frequently raised in the US Media, both print and electronic. What is more surprising is that this does not attract the ire of staunchly Muslim nations like Saudi Arabia and Egypt who like looking the other way whenever it concerns the US. If these questions were raised in India, there would have been repetitions of the Trichur hand-cutting incident if it does not boil into a full-scale riot by fanatic elements of the Minority community.
