[www.keralites.net] Unemployment in Kerala

Who says there is unemployment in Kerala.  We dont have enough casual workers to do odd jobs that we have to depend upon migrant labourere from Tamil Nadu or Bihar to do such works. The rate for daily wages for casual mannual jobs is Rs.400/- day. For semi skilled and skilled workers the rate is correspondingly high. A house painter wants Rs.500/- and a carpenter demands Rs.550/-. These are the rates prevailing in Kochi city. In almost all hotels the table cleaning boys are all nepalese or bengalis. In Perumbavoor in the timber factories all the casual workers are from Bengal. Bengali labour is migrating into Kuttanad for rice cultivation. No Kerala labour is available. But there are graduates and double graduates engaged in construction activity because they earn Rs.400/- per day. I wanted to clean up the compound and the casual labourer from Andhra demands Rs.400/- which I cannot afford. It may not be this high in other centers in Kerala but nonavailability of labour is the main problem.
