Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced Aung Sawn Sue Chee) was born to Daw Khin Kyi and
Aung San on June 19, 1945. When she was only two, her father, an independence hero was assassinated.
In 1960, Suu Kyi studied politics at Delhi University.
In 1964 through 1967, she studied at Oxford University where she met Michael Aris.
Suu Kyi married Aris in 1972 and gave birth to two sons, Alexander and Kim. She returned to
Burma in 1988 to be with her ailing mother who died on December 27, 1988.
In Burma she was plunged into a nationwide uprising for the establishment of democracy.
The rest is history.
