Dear Dr. Varghese,

 

In our area we used to say "Bandhukkaran" for son's / daughter's father in law, and "Bandhukkari" for mother in law. I dont know wether it is real malayalam or not.

Now the group is after the one word in English for son's and daughter's parents-in-law.

And we try to link these with our cultures......

But let me ask you a simple question ?

 

what is the one word in Malayalam for the son's or daughter's father-in-law or mother-in-law ?

 

In other words, what "relationship word in Malayalam" shall we use to address the mother-in-law of our son ?

Hi Sunitha,

I wonder wether there are any such words in English language. You must be wondering why?

The reason is ...language or words evolve from culture, which itself is a product of behaviour. Unlike the Indian culture where, whether you like it or not, because of marriage between a boy and a girl lots of relations are formed and a close knit society as we are, you got to live upto and conduct yourself in the socially acceptable manner with all those relations.

And hence, you got to give a proper name to each relationship.

But in the west there are no such norms ...even with in a small...nucleus family comprising only a husband and the wife, the partners demand privacy from each other ...elbow room as they like to call it.

In Hindi we call them Samdhi (I think derived from Sambandhi)
