The first Surya TV awards, jointly instituted by Sun TV Network's Malayalam edition Surya TV and Kerala Film Producers' Association, were announced by jury chairman and eminent actor Madhu at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on September 22 (Wednesday).
Shyamaprasad's Rithu was adjudged the best Malayalam film of 2009, while Shyamaprasad won the best director's award. Pazhassi Raja is the best popular film with artistic value. Mammootty was selected as the best actor, and Padmapriya the best actress.
Ranjith Sanker is the best debutant director (Passenger). Sreekumar was chosen the best male playback singer, while Shreya Ghoshal was adjudged the best female playback singer. Eminent director T.V. Chandran won a special jury award for excellence in cinema, while media personality Sasikumar won a special award for acting (Loudspeaker). K.J. Yesudas and O.N.V. Kurup would get special jury awards for their contributions.
Other awardees: Indrans (second best actor), Swetha Menon (second best female actor), Jagadish (comedy actor), Jagathy Sreekumar (villain), Baby Nivedita (child artiste), Nishan, Archana Kavi (debutant actors), Jayaraj, P.Y. Jose (Story), M.T. Vasudevan Nair (script), Girish Puthanchery (lyrics). M. Jayachandran (music direction), Bijipal (background music), Ajayan Vincent (cinematography), Beena Paul (editing), Muthuraj (art direction), George (make-up), Natarajan (costume design), Shanthikumar (choreography), Shoby Thilakan, Sreedevi (dubbing artistes), Harikumar (sound mixing) and Reema Kallingal (special award for acting). The awards will be distributed at a star-studded function in Kochi on October 15.
