Sri Krishna Janmashtami or Krishnashtami, also known as Gokulashtami, is the birthday of one of the most popular deities of Hinduism, Lord Sri Krishna.
Krishna Janmashtami, is also known as "Krishnashtami" is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, an avatar of god Vishnu.Lord Krishna was born on the Astami thithi (eighth day) in Krishna paksha during Shravan month (August – September). It falls in Bhadrapad month as per North Indian Hindi calendars. Lord Krishna's Nakshatra or the birth star is Rohini nakshatram.
The main objective or the aim of Krishna's birth was to demolish the demon Kansa and his evil acts. Kansa is Krishna's maternal uncle. Janmashtami 2010, popularly known as Krishnashtami, date is September 1, 2010. Smartha Sects celebrate the Janmashtami in 2010 on September 1 and Vaishnava sects celebrate the Krishnashtami 2010 or Gokulashtami in 2010 on September 2. Janmashtami 2010 date in North India is 2nd September (In some places).
Janmashtami is also called by these names,"Gokulashtami", "Ashtami Rohini", "Srikrishna Jayanti", "Sree Jayanthi" or simply as "Janmashtami".
The ritual is to fast the previous day (Saptami, seventh day), which is followed by a night-long vigil commemorating the birth of Krishna at midnight in the jail where his maternal uncle Kansa was keeping them captive, and his immediate removal by his father Vasudeva to a foster-home for safe-keeping.At midnight, the idol of the infant Krishna is bathed, adorned in new clothes and jewellery, placed in a cradle and worshiped.
The fast is completed after Aarti, a special prayer.
This religious festival is celebrated all over India in the month of August/September on the ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the eighth day in the month of Bhadon according to the Hindu calendar with great devotion and zeal..
Mathura & Vrindavan Celebrations:
The Janmashtami of Mathura and Vrindavan, the places where Lord Krishna had spent his childhood, are famous all over the world. Devotees from across the world come to these pious places to celebrate Janmasthami. On this auspicious occasion, temples and homes are beautifully decorated and illuminated. Night long prayers are offered and religious hymns are sung in temples. The priests chant holy mantras and bath the idol with Panchamrit which comprises of Gangajal (water from the holy Ganges River), milk, ghee (clarified butter), curd, and honey pouring all these from a conch shell. After this bath the idol of the infant Krishna (also known as Balmukund) is placed in a cradle. Devotional songs and dances mark the celebration of this festive occasion all over Northern India.
The temples especially in Vrindavan witness an extravagant and colorful celebration on this occasion. Raslila is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and to commemorate his love for Radha.
DAHI HANDI
There is one more ceremony that is fulfilled on this day and it is Dahi Handi. Dahi Handi is a quite mischief that is played by Govindas all over the world. For this naughtiness people hang Dahi Handi very high. This Dahi Handi is kept full of butter. Govindas make squads and try to smash this Dahi Handi full of butter. For this ceremony people pay huge amount of money to Govindas as a prize. This huge amount of prize is given to only that particular team of Govindas which break it fruitfully. Many teams of Govindas try to smash Dahi Handi.
