Use Internet and Mobile Phone With Care !
A DAY without internet and mobile phones has become impossible for an average person. But, cyber space poses threats unless it is properly used. "Most of the cyber crimes happen due to the lack of awareness and mainly school students become the victims," says Santhosh VK, trustee of Avanzo Charitable Trust Thrissur. Avanzo creates awareness among the public on the perils in the world of cyber space relating to mobiles, computers and internet.
Police records show that in Kerala alone, between 2008 and 2010, there were 45 suicides due to cyber causes. The basic issue on the web can be a hacked Facebook account or mail account and related harassment like blackamailing the victim financially or emotionally and in some cases both. Users are usually ignorant of how to deal with the situation and they fear the extent of social damage that would ensue. Though the government has banned mobile phones in schools. it has not reduced, the rate of cyber crimes among school children. Because, students have plenty of chances outside school to stay available on mobile phone and internet.
"Banning mobile phones in schools will not bring any changes as students can use phone after school time. And nowadays, parents give mobile phone and internet to children from the very small age itself. It is like giving a vehicle to a person who does not know driving.
They should be allowed to use technology, but with good care. Proper guidelines must be given to children. And of course, all who use cyber technologies have to be aware of both positive and negative sides of it, including the major areas of Information Technology Act," adds Santhosh. Mobile handset and SIM are one's own property. The owner is responsible for any misuse of them. Do not take photos with mobiles without permission as it is punishable.
Don't send missed calls to anonymous numbers. The receiver can complain against it. Send forward messages with care; they may contain hidden messages from terrorists.
It is illegal to have obscene photos on mobile phones. Keep the Bluetooth off always.
Don't give phone to strangers.Don't store debit card info/pin on mobile.
Make sure that all the personal information is deleted before selling the mobile. Ensure the handsets that you buy are not stolen property.
Don't receive any gifts online.Don't give personal information to unknown people or websites.
Don't create easy passwords, do not share it to anyone and change it frequently.Don't leave PC or laptop unattended.
Don't trust the profile details and photos of people online. Don't add strangers to the sites like Facebook.
Avoid making personal posts online.If you find any difficulty online or through mobile, inform elders or seek legal assistance.
