A family of mandrills at Colchester Zoo are believed to be the first in the world to invent their own sign language for cultural reasons. When staff at the zoo spotted veteran mandrill Milly covering her face with her hand they thought she was suffering from bad eyesight, but after studying her behaviour they realised she was making the gesture to say "leave me alone". The other mandrills in the group now copy this gesture.
