Kollam suicide capital of Kerala
KOLLAM: Kerala tops the country in suicide rate where 26 people per one lakh population commit suicide in a year. This is on a par with the suicide rate in the Scandinavian countries of Europe where the rate is 1,00,000:30. Thiruvananthapuram Range IG A Hemachandran said that in Kerala around 9,000 people commit suicide in a year, where the number of murders stood at 350. He was addressing a function held on the premises of Kollam East police station in connection with the inauguration of 'Prathyasa' the suicide prevention cell, the first one of its kind in the state. He said that in the case of suicides, Kollam tops the state where 800 suicide cases were reported in the past one year. Tensions in life, a fallout of modern lifestyle and the changes occurring in the family relations and social relations have been identified as the main cause for the increasing suicide rates. Inaugurating the Prathyasa, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that the new projects launched by the Kerala Police such as Janamaithri Police, Student Police Cadet, Kadalora Jagratha Samithi and Forest Protection would cement the harmonious relations between the Police and the society. The Minister said that the police wouldnot succeed if they keep aloof from the people. He also released the toll free number of the suicide prevention cell (04742753456). Minister P K Gurudasan presided over the function and DGP Jacob Punnoose, Kollam District Collector A Shajahan, BSNL District GM Kalavathi and councillor Sabeeda Begum offered felicitations. Presenting the report SP Harshitha Athalluri said that there would be four stages in the functioning of the cell Reach, Avert, Empower and Rehabilitation.
