This year marks the 10 year anniversary of celebrating World Heart Day. In 2000, the World Heart Federation...Join Keralites, Have fun & be Informed., a non-governmental organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, created the annual World Heart Day campaign to increase public awareness about the threat of heart disease and stroke.

The theme of the 2010 World Heart Day is "Workplace Wellness: Take Responsibility for Your Own Heart Health," which builds on last year's healthy workplace theme. There are simple ways to foster and promote healthy lifestyles in general and around the workplace.

Here are things that an individual can do to live a healthy lifestyle.2

  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Don't smoke or chew tobacco.
  • Limit alcohol use.

Engaging in healthy behaviors helps to control certain risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and prevent heart disease and stroke.


According to research, the Indians are genetically more prone to heart problems compared to the western counterparts. Another report says that about 20 lakhs people will die from heart attacks and coronary diseases in India in 2010-11. Yet another report suggest that India will incur an accumulated loss of $236.6 billion by 2015, primarily due to unhealthy lifestyles and diet.

With the corporate lifestyle spreading in every corner of the metros in India, Workplace Wellness is what people should now pay attention to, both from individual as well as organization level. The employers should understand the fact that heart healthy workplace impacts the productivity of the of employees and their health care costs. At the same time, each employee should understand the impact of a healthy heart to his/her own progress.

So the World Heart Day 2010 Theme, "Workplaces Wellness: Take responsibility for your own heart health" is very much suited. To "work with the heart", you need a "healthy heart".
