Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 24 (IANS) Malayalam poet and lyricist from Kerala Ottaplavil Neelakandan Velu Kurup Friday became the fifth Malayalee to get the Jnanpith award, the highest literary award in the country.
ONV, as he is popularly known, has been selected for the award for 2007. He is the second poet after G. Sankara Kurup to get this award for poetry.
The other three Jnanpith award winners from Kerala are S.K. Pottekad (1980), Thakazhi Siva Sankara Pillai (1984) and M.T. Vasudevan Nair (1995).
'After a long gap, this award is coming to a Malayalee. No doubt, this is an appreciation for Malayalam poetry,' an elated ONV, who was conferred the Padmashri award in 1998, reacted.
Renowned author and filmmaker M.T. Vasudevan Nair said: 'This is a news I was waiting to hear for sometime.' എഴുത്തച്ഛന്റെ പേരിലുള്ള പുരസ്കാരം ലഭിച്ചതില് ഏറെ സന്തോഷമുണ്ടെന്ന് പ്രശസ്ത കവി ഒ എന് വി കുറുപ്പ് പറഞ്ഞു. തന്റെ മനസില് കവിതയെന്ന സങ്കല്പ്പം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത് എഴുത്തച്ഛന്റെ അധ്യാത്മ രാമായണമാണ്. നേരത്തേ കിട്ടേണ്ടതായിരുന്നു ഈ പുരസ്കാരം എന്ന തോന്നല് തനിക്കില്ലെന്നും ഒ എന് വി പറഞ്ഞു.
Seventy nine-year-old ONV, considered as the greatest living poet in the country, is also a popular lyricist in Malayalam cinema.
In 1989, he won the national award for best lyricist for the film 'Vaishali'. He has also won 13 state film awards for best lyricist.
Born May 27, 1931 at Chavara, Kollam in Kerala, he graduated in economics from S.N. College, Kollam and completed post-graduate degree in Malayalam literature.
His first published poem was 'Munnottu' (Forward) which appeared in a local weekly in 1946 and since then, he has not looked back. 
വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച ചേര്ന്ന ജ്ഞാനപീഠം പുരസ്കാര നിര്ണയ സമിതിയാണ് ഈ തീരുമാനമെടുത്തത്. 2008ലെ ജ്ഞാനപീഠം പുരസ്കാരം ഉറുദു കവി ഷഹരിയാറിന് നല്കാനും തീരുമാനമായിട്ടുണ്ട്.
കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ചവറയില് ഒറ്റപ്ലാവില് കുടുംബത്തില് ഒ.എന് കൃഷ്ണകുറുപ്പിന്റെയും ലക്ഷ്മിക്കുട്ടി അമ്മയുടേയും മകനായി 1931 മേയ് 27നാണ് ഒഎന്വി ജനിച്ചത്. സാമ്പത്തികശാസ്ത്രത്തില് ബിരുദവും മലയാളത്തില് ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും നേടിയ അദ്ദേഹം 1957 മുതല് എറണാകുളം മഹാരാജാസ് കോളേജില് അധ്യാപകനായി.
1958 മുതല് 25 വര്ഷം തിരുവനന്തപുരം യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി കോളേജിലും കോഴിക്കോട് ആര്ട്സ് ആന്റ് സയന്സ് കോളേജിലും തലശ്ശേരി ഗവണ്മെന്റ് ബ്രണ്ണന് കോളേജിലും തിരുവനന്തപുരം ഗവണ്മെന്റ് വിമന്സ് കോളേജിലും മലയാളവിഭാഗം തലവനായി സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു.
1986 മേയ് 31ന് ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതത്തില് നിന്നും വിരമിച്ചെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് ഒരു വര്ഷക്കാലം കോഴിക്കോട് സര്വകലാശാലയില് വിസിറ്റിങ് പ്രൊഫസര് ആയിരുന്നു.
1982 മുതല് 1987 വരെ കേന്ദ്ര സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അംഗമായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കേരള കലാമണ്ഡലത്തിന്റെ ചെയര്മാനായും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
വിദ്യാര്ത്ഥിയായിരിക്കുമ്പോള് തന്നെ കവിതാരചന തുടങ്ങിയ ഒ.എന്.വി യുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ കവിതാ സമാഹാരം പൊരുതുന്ന സൗന്ദര്യം ആണ്. 1949ലാണ് ഇത് പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയത്.
അഗ്നിശലഭങ്ങള്, ഭൂമിക്കൊരു ചരമഗീതം, മൃഗയ, വെറുതെ, ഉപ്പ്, അപരാഹ്നം, ഭൈരവന്റെ തുടി, ശാര്ങ്ഗക പക്ഷികള്, ഉജ്ജയിനി, മരുഭൂമി, തോന്ന്യാക്ഷരങ്ങള്, ഞാന് നിന്നെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു, മാറ്റുവിന് ചട്ടങ്ങളെ, ദാഹിക്കുന്ന പാനപാത്രം, നീലക്കണ്ണുകള്, മയില്പീലി, അക്ഷരം, ഒരു തുള്ളി വെളിച്ചം, കറുത്ത പക്ഷിയുടെ പാട്ട്, തുടങ്ങിയ കവിതാസമാഹാരങ്ങളും, കവിതയിലെ പ്രതിസന്ധികള്, കവിതയിലെ സമാന്തര രേഖകള്, എഴുത്തച്ഛന് എന്നീ പഠനങ്ങളും ഒഎന്വിയുടേതായി മലയാളത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്..
നാടക ഗാനങ്ങള്, ചലച്ചിത്ര ഗാനങ്ങള് എന്നീ ശാഖകളിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഭവാന ചെറുതല്ല. സരോജിനിയാണ് ഒഎന്വിയുടെ ഭാര്യ. രാജീവന്, മായാദേവി എന്നിവര് മക്കളാണ്.
എം.ടി വാസുദേവന് നായര് (1995), തകഴി ശിവശങ്കരപ്പിള്ള (1984), എസ്.കെ പൊറ്റേക്കാട്(1980), ജി. ശങ്കരക്കുറുപ്പ് (1965) എന്നിവരാണ് ജ്ഞാനപീഠം പുരസ്ക്കാരം നേടിയ മറ്റ് മലയാളം എഴുത്തുകാര്.
Ottaplavil Neelakandan Velu Kurup is a famous Malayalam poet from Kerala, India. He is acknowledged[by whom? as one of the greatest living poets in India. O. N. V. Kurup is also a lyricist in Malayalam cinema. He received the Padmashri Award from the Government of India in 1998. He is also called O. N. V., without the surname. O. N. V. is known for his leftist leaning. He was the Left Democratic Front ( LDF ) candidate in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency for the Lok-Sabha elections in 1989, and was the runner-up.
O. N. V. Kurup was born to O. N. Krishna Kurup and K. Lakshmikutty Amma, on May 27, 1931 at Chavara, Kollam in Kerala. He lost his father when he was eight. His childhood days were spent in the village where he attended the public 'Government School, Chavara'. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Economics from SN College, Kollam, he moved to Thiruvananthapuram city (Trivandrum) where he joined Travancore University (now Kerala University) and pursued Master of Arts (postgraduate) in Malayalam literature. O. N. V. was a lecturer at Maharajas College - Ernakulam, University College - Trivandrum, Arts and Science College - Kozhikode, and Brennen College - Thalassery. He joined Government Women's College - Trivandrum as the Head of Malayalam Department. He was also a visiting professor at Calicut University. He retired from service in 1986.He is now settled in Vazhuthacaud in Thiruvanathapuram, with his wife Sarojini, son Rajeev, and daughter Mayadevi.
