Re: [www.keralites.net] brain blood flow - advice required.

Dear all,

I do not understand why people who are not qualified to give medical advises are writing these kind of medical evaluation and guidelines. In many countries a licensed person can only write medical advises otherwise trouble including prosecution. The law may be based of the state's interest of well being of its subjects.

Thanks

Before you try these.... please see some of the adverse effects it can cause..
1. when you say theses drugs have to be "studied" there is no well controlled studies except maybe saint jone's wort. Even that the trials are not adequately powered to show any significant effects.
2. If you are taking drugs like warfarin or othermedications that are metabolized through the liver, these herbs can have significant drug interactions. Please consult your doctor before trying these on your own.
I am a Medical professional and the side effects below are taken from a Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.
Gingko Biloba: Orally, ginkgo leaf extract is well tolerated in typical doses. It can cause mild gastrointestinal (GI) upset, headache, dizziness, palpitations, constipation, and allergic skin reactions. Large doses can cause restlessness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, lack of muscle tone, and weakness.

Spontaneous bleeding is one of the most concerning potential side effects associated with ginkgo. There are several published case reports linking ginkgo to episodes of minor to severe bleeding; however, not all case reports clearly establish ginkgo as the cause of bleeding. In most cases, other bleeding risk factors were also present including taking other medications, old age, liver cirrhosis, recent surgery, and other conditions. In most cases, bleeding occurred after several weeks or months of taking ginkgo
Vinpocetine: Orally, adverse effects include gastric discomfort, vertigo, anxiety, nausea, facial flushing, sleep disturbances, and headache
Saint John's Wort: Side effects can include insomnia, vivid dreams, restlessness, anxiety, agitation, irritability, gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort, diarrhea, fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness, and headache. St. John's wort can also cause skin rash, paresthesia, and hypoglycemia. Insomnia can often be alleviated by decreasing the dose or taking St. John's wort in the morning.

It is true that there are many herbs claimed to increase the blood flow to the brain.
Daily exercise, any type that increases the heart rate increases blood flow to the brain.
Practicing YOGA especially does that with much more benefits!!!
Rather than asking non medical friends about medications, who in their eagerness to help and share half boiled ideas, may do harm unwittingly, it is my opinion that in these matters professional help will be ideal.

In Ayurveda and Modern medicine as well as other branches there are proven drugs; but their dosage for individual person may vary.

I am working as Executive Secretary in Hyderabad . First of all I thank you all for the advice given by my friends for uterine fibroids. I also would like to take the advice from all of you for increasing the blood flow to the brain as I came to know about some herbs which increases the blood flow and would remain active. But unfortunately these herbs are not available in India , I here give below the description which was downloaded from the net. I would like to mention that most of the time I am quite idle in the office for long stretch of hours making me dull.
1) Vinpocetine. This extract, derived from an alkaloid found in the Periwinkle plant, is used as a cerebral vasodilator. It increases blood flow to the brain, which improves its oxygenation and thereby increases mental alertness and acuity. Research suggests it may also be the most powerful memory enhancer available to date.
2) Gingko Biloba. The leaves of this tree have been proven to increase blood flow to the brain. The trees are often planted in parks. My friends and I used to eat a few leaves when we wanted a brain boost. It is also inexpensive, if you buy the capsules or tea at any health food store.
3) Saint John's Wort. This is a common weed that may be growing in your yard. Although it's brain enhancing qualities are less documented (studies do show it's usefulness for treating long-term depression), many people swear by it's temporary mood-elevating effect, and our brains tend to function better when we are happy. It is inexpensive, but I used to just collect it in the yard and make tea of it. (Hyperacum Perforatum, if you want to look it up by it's botanical name.)
It is requested whether any alternative herbs are available.
With Thanks & Regards,
